Character and Tales

Picture
According to "An Appalachian Childhood" written by David Osborne (one of his grandchildren), Grover Cleveland Osborne was known as Cleveland and Cleve.
  • He had a violent temper with a reputation for arguing, fighting, threatening, and possibly criminal behavior.
  • He was known to keep a gun in the house.
  • Rumor had it that he shot a man in Kentucky before he moved to Ohio.
  • There were also reports that he had spent time in jail for this incident.
  • He was in the Boyd County Jail at the time the 1910 census was taken, but I have not obtained any records regarding why he was incarcerated.
  • He made honey and kept many bee hives on the property, hunting the queen bees down if they tried to relocate.
  • He was a farmer and some of his crops included corn, soy, beans, alfalfa, timothy hay.
  • He also had a large orchard of apples and peaches and had horses and cows.
  • Cleveland liked to watch wrestling and would get right in front of the television and yell at the participants. He was an instigator and would give each of his grandchildren a nickel for participating in races or wrestling.
